Images of Santa Claus and friends enjoying polka music across Texas this Christmas Season. Clockwise from top left: Santa and his buddy Stan Ulcak in Sweet Home, Ross from Das Ist Lustig playing the alpenhorn at the Tomball German Christmas Market, Santa dancing at the Ellinger Christmas Music Show, a table of Christmas gifts at the Happy Counsins Dance in Sealy, and festive dancers at the Liberty Hill Band dance in Bryan last month.
There have always been multiple styles of polka music and dancing. The following descriptions are a generalization. The two main styles are Northern and Texas. Northern has come out of the Germanic/Polish style due to the large number of immigrants to the Chicago, Cleveland, and Midwest states who have kept their roots music and adapted to the area. The general style is very staccato and danced with a hopping step.
