Bohemian Princess Diary

I finally did it. I had been saying I was going to check out the Fab 5 Beatles Tribute at Lodge 88 in Houston, and finally did on Sept.

7. What a fun time! The ballroom was packed with folks celebrating birthdays and such. My group just came to sing along to every Beatles tune. And we did.

It wasn't just Beatles' songs; the group also played other hits from the 1960s and '70s like Hang on Sloopy. I haven't heard these songs in years, yet the words came tumbling out of my mouth like I was back in junior high. Funny how I can't remember names and other important stuff, but I belted out Hang on Sloopy like nobody's business! The Fab 5 will be back at the Lodge on Nov. 16. We plan to be there, too!

This month is packed with Oktoberfests, Czech Heritage Month celebrations, and other fun festivals paying tribute to the mushroom (Madisonville), hog (Elgin), and chili (Czhilispiel). I even found there's a Bacon Fest in Aransas Pass benefitting the first responders there. I had to use six pages to list everything and I still don't think I got it all.

Texas Polka News is proud to sponsor the Polka On! Octoberfest at the Heritage Fest on Oct. 19 at the Texas Czech Heritage & Cultural Center in La Grange featuring the Dujka Brothers. This is the pre-party to the Heritage Fest the next day with Jerry Haisler & Melody 5 and Enzian Buam, and the Muziky performance paying tribute to the Vrazels' Polka Band. It's gonna be some great music, y'all!

Whichever fest you think is best, have a great time. That's what it's all about as former Alpenfest band leader Mike Barker says in his story on page 10.

Till next month, Polka On!
