Remembering Ernest Kurtz

A truly devoted son of the town of Shiner passed away on April 4. Ernest John Kurtz was born October 12, 1943 in Shiner to the late Rudy and Veronica (Mikes) Kurtz. He loved music and played drums in several bands. There were not many dance halls in Texas that Ernest didn’t play in. He started his own band called Tequila Sunrise in the early years and also played with The Sundowners; Rudy Kurtz Orchestra, led by his dad; Pat Viet Orchestra; Gene Heidaker’s New Edition; Louis Holman's Just Country, his brother Rudy’s band, and of course, the Shiner Hobo Band.

Ernest was the youngest in the Kurtz family, and his brother, Laddie, called him the renegade. Laddie said that as a family they all got along, though, and music was a big part of their lives. Ernest worked at the Spoetzel Brewery for years and also at a sheet metal company in Shiner.
