George Strait: A Country Legend
With a one-of-a-kind voice like an angel, and the fact that he has sold over 100 million records worldwide, it is easy to see why George Strait has been dubbed, "The King of Country Music." However, George's success did not happen overnight. His career in country almost didn't happen at all.
Born on May 18, 1952 in Poteet, Texas, George grew up on his family's ranch and worked there on the weekends and during the summer. In high school, George played in a rock-n-roll band with his friends but then began gaining an interest in country music. Artists like Merle Haggard and Bob Wills began to inspire him even more.
After finishing high school in 1971, George married his sweetheart, Norma. After that, he served in the U.S Army while stationed in Hawaii. During his army years, he formed a band called, Rambling Country which played at small gigs off base. In 1972, George and Norma welcomed their first child, Jenifer.
