ST. JOHN PICNIC

A lot of Texans can’t imagine spending July 4th any other way than attending the St. John Picnic, now in its 131st year. The day starts with Mass at 9 am, flag raising at 10 am, then get in line for the fried chicken and St. John stew dinner. Music and dancing in the pavilion starts at 11 am with the Shiner Hobo Band, followed by Red Ravens and Dujka Brothers, and into the night with Texas Dream. Th e celebration culminates with fireworks at 9:30 pm. See ad, p. 22.

STS. CYRIL & METHODIUS, DUBINA

Dubina, the first Czech settlement in Texas, is celebrating its 163rd church picnic on Sun., July 7. Attend Polka Mass in the painted church at 9 am with music by Lost Cause, then feast on the Dubina-style fried chicken and sausage dinner starting at 11 am. Mark Halata & Texavia and Lost Cause take turns providing the music from 12-7 pm. There is always a great jam and sing-along session. See ad, p. 22.
