Editor’s Log Polkadate January 2021, the status quo.

The pandemic of 2020 still has its teeth firmly sunk into society as we flee into the New Year. It peaked in July and decreased only to climb back up after the Thanksgiving holidays. This would indicate another possible wave in early January resulting from Christmas gatherings. The Spanish flu performed likewise a century ago (three waves). A cure was never found and its toll just decreased in intensity over time. That particular strain of flu is still with us, but over the decades it has filtered down to causing 34,000 American deaths last year (versus ca. 675,000 deaths in 1920) and is commonly called “the flu”. The local dance world has lost at least one dancer to the pandemic and several others have been hospitalized.
