Bohemian Princess Diary

Thanks to all who attended the Polka Month Dance on Jan. 26 at Sefcik Hall, benefitting the International Polka Association. Wow! What a turnout. The dance added another memory to the walls of this historic hall.

Highlights: the Praha Brothers' crisp Texas polka sound...Alice Sulak singing for the crowd...my honor to present Alice with a plaque from the IPA recognizing her many years as a polka musician and promoter...being presented a plaque from the IPA by Danny Zapletal congratulating the Texas Polka News on its 30 years of publishing... dancers of all ages...20 new IPA Texas members.

Lowlight: not being the winning bidder on the Slivovitz and cream cheese kolache roll!

Read more about this great evening on page 10 and enjoy the photos.

This issue also contains the 4th Annual Spring & Summer Fest Guide. Cover story this year is the 40th anniversary of the South Texas Sausage & Polka Festival in Hallettsville. Also celebrating a milestone anniversary is the 30th Cotton Gin Festival in Burton. Congrats to both festivals and here's to many more years of sausage, polka, cotton, and gin. Oh, no wait, different kind of gin.

The guide offers the first glimpse of the church picnic schedule. I am very pleased to have Live Oak Brewing Company once again sponsoring this special section. You'll want to get those calendars out and start marking the dates and planning your spring and summer weekends! Also take a trip to Live Oak. Sitting in the bier garten under the live oaks will make it hard to believe you're only 8 miles from downtown Austin.

Kudos to Erik McCowan for offering dance hall tours. It's a great way to learn about Texas music history and keep the dancing spark aglow. Having Gary McKee along on these trips provides an added bonus, because he knows his Texas history! Enjoy Gary's column about the latest tour with photos on page 9. Glad to hear this will be a monthly event.

And, finally, I have given up my home office for an office at the Work Lodge. It's a great high-energy work concept for small businesses, and two weeks in, I'm feeling more productive! Lowlight: can't just wear sweats and watch TV whenever I want. Sigh!

Enjoy all that March has to offer and until next month, Polka On!
