Grammy-winning musician and producer Alex Meixner gave a polka presentation to nearly 700 area band students Tuesday in the El Campo High School auditorium. ECHS band director Mark Van Gorp invited the world-renown accordion player and music educator to speak to students from El Campo high school and middle school, St. Philip the Apostle Catholic School’s sixth through eighth grades along with Boling, Needville and Wharton ISDs.

“I brought him (Meixner) in because I feel that polka is a dying art with the younger generations. Older people go to the dances, but a high school student may not be able to tell you a polka song,” Van Gorp said.

For about an hour and 15 minutes, Meixner enthusiastically keyed his accordion and talked about his polka roots and how the sound grew into an American folk music genre.
