Do the Church Picnic Polka! It's that time of year. You will want to check out the picnic listings on page 19 and mark your calendar accordingly, or accordionly. Ha! Welcome new advertiser Live Oak Brewing Company of Austin who will be bringing you the picnic calendar through October. I think a road trip may be in order to visit the tap room.
Speaking of beer, I'm pleased to announce that Shiner Beer has signed on as a band sponsor for the Texas Polka News 30th Birthday Bash on Sat., June 30 in Schulenburg. Slovacek's is also a sponsor. I'm looking for other businesses to participate at sponsors and donate door prizes, so please contact me if you're interested. This is shaping up to be one heck of a Texas party!
The subscription drive is still on! Sign up or renew your subscription and designate a dance club or ethnic cultural organization to receive $5 of the price. Those groups who bring in the most new subs and renewals will be award cash prizes at the Birthday Bash. Deadline is May 31, 2018.
Congratulations to Bobby Flores for being named Western Swing Male Vocalist of the Year by the Academy of Western Artists. Actually, congrats to all who were nominated. It reads like a who's who of great Texas music!
Congratulations to film maker Erik McCowan for completing his labor of love - Dance Hall Days documentary. The film will be shown at two film festivals in April, and I'm sure there will be more opportunities to see this story about Texas dance halls. Read more on page 9.
Two May festivals will be celebrating 100 years of Czech Independence. Texas Czech Heritage & Cultural Center has opened a new museum exhibit: WWI and the Birth of Czechoslavakia. During Slavnost on May 20, the Eva Adams Ceska Kapela from the Czech Republic will perform to honor the independence milestone. The kapela will also perform at the National Polka Festival in Ennis on Memorial Day Weekend. It will be great to have these world-renowned recording artists as our Texas guests! Read more about them on page 15.
And check out our sports section this month. Yes, sports. Gary covered the first Walburg Super Bowl between the Walburg Germans and the Corn Hill Czechs. (Czechs won, of course!) Get the play-by-play on page 16.
Till next month, Polka On!
